Latinas in California are a demographic force, representing the largest share of California women at 39%, and the leaders who are building a more equitable state, despite lack of philanthropic investment. Prominent researchers and Latina elected and appointed leaders, will discuss key indicators on the status and impact of Latina leadership in California, and underscore strategies to continue to strengthen the Latina leadership pipeline in our state to benefit all communities.

Some of California’s most important educational leaders will discuss challenges and opportunities in reimagining California’s educational system to better serve the needs of students, particularly Black and Latinx students, multilingual learners, and students experiencing poverty. What is California’s vision for a more equitable educational system, and what promising strategies, policy initiatives, and solutions are being piloted and scaled? What is being done to streamline and increase high school to college and career pathways and making transferring from community college to four-year institutions more effective? What remains to be done to build a more flourishing education system that advances educational justice for communities of color and other historically marginalized and minoritized populations.

Equity In Mental Health for Black Women and Latinas

Latinx and Black Americans, young people, women, and those with low incomes are most at risk of mental health challenges and are the populations most burdened by the social determinants of health. Current health and mental health care delivery and support systems have not been designed or equipped to support the needs of Black women and Latinas. This panel will feature experts and researchers in the mental health field who will shine a light on recent data uncovered by HOPE and BWOPA-TILE on the current state of mental health for Black and Latina women in California and key strategies to increasing mental health access for our communities.
